Forest of the Night (The Circle)
Here it is--the final "Dreamscapes" cover for the fourth book in my Circle series, FOREST OF THE NIGHT. Forest, which I abbreviate as FOTN, was a challenge to write in many ways. For one thing, I learned that the Shadows line was closing before I had written this book--only through luck and the hard work of my editors at Silhouette (Melissa Jeglinski and Leslie Wainger) were we able to finish the series at all. The original FOTN became the final book of the entire Shadows line, which was a sad thing. Also, I found myself writing an interracial romance, and although I didn't want to focus on that, neither did I want to pretend that Drake and Cy's race issues didn't exist (more on that when I add a FAQ!) So it became a challenge. This cover, for the first time, captures some of Cy's real flavor, for which I'm glad. |

Italian Cover
Here is the cover of the Italian translation of FOTN, called Nel bene e nel male, which I think means "Neither good nor bad." Feel free to correct me if your Italian is better than mine! I found this cover fairly attractive, but the woman on the cover did not look like Cypress to me... particularly not with that nightgown on! She would like to make it clear, once and for all, that despite the Italian cover, as well as the original Shadows cover (see above), Cypress Bernard does not wear long white nightgowns, thank you very much. |

| Reviews
"You don't find this type of book with Harlequin often, so this was a
delightful surprise. There is magic and the passion between Cypress and
Drake was hot. This is one of my favorite books this year." "I love paranormal romances and even though the DreamScapes series is
cancelled this is a pretty good book. The Author created a unique world where
the forces of evil and good are pushed and a dark man must overcome his issues
to love Cypress (the main female)." "Ms. Vaughn generates an intense ambiance as a fitting backdrop for an
equally intense love story that will singe your fingertips as you turn the
pages."

Where I Got My Ideas for Burning Times (and Other Trivia) FOREST OF THE NIGHT may be the most difficult book I've ever had to write. Even as I started it, I learned that the Silhouette Shadows line was being discontinued. That particular medium for stories mixing horror and romance was coming to an end. Thankfully, the editors at Silhouette were determined to let me finish my Circle Series, and held open a slot for Cypress' story. It ended up being the curtain slot - the last Silhouette Shadows ever. Each of the books in this series afforded me wonderful challenges - using humor in WAITING FOR THE WOLF MOON, writing about an already happily married couple in BURNING TIMES, weaving religious undertones into BENEATH THE SURFACE, and now - an interracial romance. In previous books I'd created Cypress as a mixed-race heroine whose earth magic can be traced back through generations of Louisiana's settlers - Creole, Spanish, French, English, and even Natchez Indians. Suddenly I, a white woman, was faced with writing a story with her as the heroine, when the British hero I pictured was majorly white. I did a lot of research for this one. Also, I was able to use the conflicts of the hero and heroine on several levels. Cypress, as a Wiccan, uses good or so-called "white" magic, whereas Drake, the hero, is a ceremonial magician who has had dealings with manipulative or "black" magic. When they unite their powers to combat an evil entity poisoning the energies in Cy's town, their story becomes one of multifaceted integration. They call the evil "the dragon" because Drake, with a Hong Kong childhood, recognizes that it is using ley lines, or channels for energy beneath the earth, to spread its darkness. In feng shui, those powers beneath the earth are sometimes called dragons. In this case, the "dragon" allowed me to explain why Stagwater has been such a dangerous place to live over the previous three books! As far as contrasts go, this book was a love-hate experience for me, because I loved the story but hated writing it and seeing my time with Silhouette Shadows end. FOREST OF THE NIGHT was voted "favorite science fiction romance" in the AFFAIRE DE COEUR magazine's 1997 Reader's Poll, which gives me hope that my efforts succeeded. The Circle Series will always be precious to me, because they were my introduction into publication, and as part of a romance line that included such great editors as Melissa Jeglinski and Leslie Wainger, and such great authors as Anne Stuart, Maggie Shayne, and Rachel Lee, among others. |
